Management
Richard Hoffman, J.D., M.B.A., is a co-founder and Keel’s President and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Hoffman is a seasoned executive and entrepreneur in the biotechnology and health care industries. He is a co-founder of TargetRx, Inc. and Phylogix, Inc., which collectively attracted more than $50 million in venture capital funding. Mr. Hoffman also has served as a business development consultant for Abgenix, Inc. and Surface Logix, Inc. Prior to his work in venture initiation and consulting, Mr. Hoffman served as Vice President of Finance and Business Development at Avitech Diagnostics, Inc. and Hybridon, Inc., and as a partner at the law firm of Hale and Dorr.
Paul J. Hippenmeyer, Ph.D., is Keel’s Director of Research. Dr. Hippenmeyer is an experienced cellular and molecular biologist with a history of leading successful project and product teams. Prior to joining Keel, Dr. Hippenmeyer was a co-founder and Vice President of Biosynthecore, a St. Louis-based biotechnology startup. From 1984 to 2003 he served in various research positions at Monsanto Company, G.D. Searle and Co., Pharmacia Corporation, and Pfizer, Inc., most recently as Fellow and Senior Research Advisor.
Board of Directors
Joseph M. Davie, M.D., Ph.D., is a business and scientific advisor to biotechnology companies and venture capital investors. Most recently, Dr. Davie served as Senior Vice President, Research at Biogen, Inc., which he joined in 1993 as Vice President, Research. During his tenure at Biogen, Biogen developed and received approval for Avonex, its first major product and a leading treatment for the autoimmune disease multiple sclerosis. From 1987 to 1993, Dr. Davie held several positions at G.D. Searle & Co., including President, Research and Development and Senior Vice President, Science and Technology. Dr. Davie is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies. He is a member of the Boards of Directors of BG Medicine, Inc., Curis, Inc., CV Therapeutics, Inc., Inflazyme Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Targeted Genetics, Inc. Dr. Davie also serves as an advisor to RiverVest Venture Partners.
Denise Faustman, M.D., Ph.D., is a co-founder and Chairman of Keel’s Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Faustman is the inventor of the technology that underlies Keel’s therapeutic approach. She is Director of Immunobiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She has worked in the field of autoimmunity for over 15 years. Dr. Faustman has made some of the key discoveries regarding the role of MHC Class I antigen presentation in immunity. Previously, Dr. Faustman was a founder of Diacrin, Inc., which raised $30 million in venture capital financing before going public in 1996.

Joseph Klein, III, M.B.A., is the Managing Director of Gauss Capital Advisors, LLC, a financial and investment advisory firm focused on medical technologies, and a Venture Partner at Red Abbey Venture Partners, LP. From 1999 to 2000, Mr. Klein was Vice President, Strategy, for Medical Manager Corporation, a physician office management information systems vendor. Prior to joining Medical Manager, Mr. Klein had 10 years of experience as a health care portfolio manager and securities analyst at T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc. and The Kaufmann Fund, Inc. Mr. Klein is a member of the Boards of Directors of BioMarin Pharmaceutical, Inc., NPS Pharmaceuticals, Inc., OSI Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Savient Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
John P. McKearn, Ph.D., is Chief Executive Officer of Kalypsys, Inc. Prior to joining Kalypsys, Dr. McKearn was Senior Vice President of Discovery Research at Pharmacia Corporation from August 2000 to July 2003. From 1987 to 2000, he served in various research positions at G.D. Searle & Co., most recently as Vice President of Discovery Research. In his various research positions with Pharmacia and G. D. Searle, Dr. McKearn had direct responsibility for research and development activities that generated several important prescription drugs. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Kalypsys, Inc. and ID Pharma, Inc.
